A rest day...with some rest day discussion...

So, I think I'm taking a rest day today. Stop, I just heard you all gasp. :P I had a long drive yesterday and a late night last night with some sleep interrupted by the dog, so... I'm a little beat, but we'll see if after a nap I feel like trekking to the nearest globo gym to stir up a little trouble. ;) But to take a page from a few other affiliates' posts, even though today is a rest day, I'm going to start two rest day discussions. One question is for the ladies, and one question for both ladies and gents. But gents if you want to go across the board and answer the ladies' question, feel free. But before I get there, I need to say one thing. Jerry, the poll has closed, and it looks like people would like to see Tony and Sevan at CFOT. Perhaps we could invite the "Ass Whooping Chronicles" to the Blue Room. ;)

Alright, my first question sort of pertains to the Zone and is for the ladies. My question is this, in that God awful week that happens to us all once a month, how do you hold the Zone? While buying groceries this morning for a Zone friendly breakfast, I did a horrible and terrible thing. I also bought ice cream. Seriously, I have not done that in months, and it felt terrible, but while I was in the grocery store, my sweet tooth was SCREAMING. I really thought other people were going to be able to hear it. Seriously, it was that loud. So, what tips/tricks do you have for calming yourself, or do you just tap into your steel resolve and head past all the desserts etc.? My resolve over the last two weeks has weakened, and I feel awful because I have left the world of strict Zone and headed into the world of approximate Zone, with way too much cheating. I keep saying I need to go through the two weeks again, but with a half gallon of ice cream already with a (small) dent in it, it doesn't seem likely that the 2 week refresher will start today. But ladies, or gents if you know of your wife's/so's tricks, please feel free to pass them along because I seriously want to go polish off that entire gallon right now.

Now, my question for both sexes... if you had the opportunity to date someone but it involved distance, would you do it? I put myself on dating hiatus for awhile because I felt like I had just been beaten by the relationship stick way to much recently, and it's been awhile since I've been really interested in dating anyone. I met a very nice man a while back, and would like to start seeing him. Trouble is, I'm not sure I should express those thoughts since any situation, regardless of the seriousness, would involve distance. He is a good guy and would be worth the effort from my end, but I'm curious on others' thoughts on this. I realize this does not pertain to CrossFit, but let's be honest, we all love CrossFit, but it's not the only thing in our lives, and we do have opinions on other topics. Thoughts today are helpful... and you'd better comment quickly and keep me away from the ice cream!!!!

I dated a girl for about a year where there was a 2 hour drive between us.

I kind of liked it but then again, I'm kind of anti-social so a couple of weekends a month is enough social interaction for me.

Go for it! As I like to say failure (or rejection) is better than regret. If you don't try you'll never know, if you do try and it doesn't work out at least you know. Then you can get on with you life.

Put aside any expectations of how you think things should be and just enjoy the time you have together.

I ditto what p.t. says :)

Thanks for the comments guys. I have to say I am a little surprised that you are all in support of it and not encouraging me to run the other way. Interesting.... I know what it is. All the men who read my blog must be good ones... ;)

Well after you said that I have to agree now. I would have regardless :)

Sorry for the second comment. Posted the first before I stated that; I dated a girl for 4 months before she moved 24hours away by car to go to school. We broke up when she left and a two weeks of talking on the phone we decided to stay together.

We then dated for the next 9 years and have now been married for the last two. Sometimes it works.

I wouldn't have any good advice about long distance relationships. I was never good at them. But if you can make it work go for it....

As for that "special girl's time"..
Some times you got to do what you got to do to retain your santity.
Remember... Ice cream is not forbidden. Just balance it out and don't over do it...

Yeah I know. That's the hard part. It's hard to resist the enticement of the whole tub of ice cream sitting in your freezer. It calls to you and whispers your name, especially in the darkness of late night.
A great test of will power isn't it??? :)

My hubby and I dated long-distance for 9 months before he transferred to the Pentagon. He lived in MAN Diego and me in DC. Not easy but we did it and now we are happily married. I say go for it!

Thanks for all the stories guys. It's amazing what some of you have gone through for your significant others. I loved hearing them, so thank you for sharing!

And yes Forts, you must all be good ones...;)

No advice on the long-distance thing, other than I moved 500kms after a 9-month relationship and remain married to her after eight years.

Oh, and I dare not comment on the period/cravings/ice cream thing. This is the reason I'm still married :)

See Lars, I always knew you were a smart man... ;) Sometimes not commenting is the smartest thing you can do... ;)

Thank you so much for your words of wisdom in regards to dining out while on the Zone. I will definitely do that!

Hey Katie - I did a search about a month ago on the crossfit message boards regarding the pms cravings. Don't do the same thing! The women who responded were super hardcore and, well, wonder women. I only felt worse about my cravings, not better. So, my opinion is probably not the one you wanted to hear: go for the richest, creamiest ice cream cone you can find. Hello, single serving! Craving is fulfilled and there's not stupid tub calling your name to lick it clean.

As for the LDR thing, sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Be sure that you are really into him and not just the romantic idea of him. Sometimes distance not only makes the heart grow fonder but it also makes the head cloudy and the eyes blind to reality.

Re: Zone and Menstruation - I grew up as the only boy with three sisters. I am married and (so far ;)) have two girls. So, I'm not squeemish about this. I would like to see research on what the Zone diet claims it does with hormone levels (really the major focus of the diet) as related to the menstruation cycle. Surely there should be variations. My wife agrees with you, Katie. In fact, she said something like: during that week Zone - Schmone.

Re: Long distance runaround(any prog fans?) - My attitude here flies in the face of my admitted girly crying at romance on the screen. I can't see the reason behind starting a committed long term exclusive relationship over extreme distance. Maintaining one that already started - maybe. I mean, if you're sure it's love, then commit to surviving until you can be close and actively seek this. But beginning a relationship that only meets face-to-face on rare occasions might be a reaction to fear...a safe way to be in a relationship.

Everybody can be loveydovey about LDR...I did it for 2 years, but then found other boys interesting because they were closer...then again I was 20 at the time...at 22 my bf moved to Minneapolis and I to Chicago. We broke up and still saw each other and I saw other boys as well. Talk about the best situation in the world!

You must ask yourself: Is he worth the price of gas? :)

RE: Ice cream. Whatever you do, don't read the "Breyers Every Night" thread on the message boards of the main site. Diabolical.

"Zone - Schmone." - Fabulous. Reminds me of another quote from another wise man: "Be Moderate In Everything, Including Moderation"

I leave for like 4 hours and have tons to read! I heart you guys!

Georgia, Brad, and Tanya... I'm in the process of deciding what to do about the LDR or even if it is worth it. Hell, I still don't know what his thoughts are on it... it may be completely pointless to wonder at this point! I'm gathering opinions to help while I sort through things. I have done LDR before, but I was much younger (18) and at that point, we had already been together for 3+ years. I know, I know... what the hell was I thinking? I should have been playing the field...

Anyhoo... I would love to see some research as well on the Zone and horomone thing. The comment "Zone Schmone" may need to be censored to spare Jerry from a heart attack... ;)

Tami- already read it... curses...

Tanya- I may need to consider your point... the more boys the better right? ;)

Adrienne said...

umm.. did the LDR thing for a year an a half with a guy living in Germany. I'd say don't do it, but then I realize it wasn't the LDR it was HIM!!!

If you really like him and he's a great guy and there's a future.. then do it. If not.. stick with guys around here.. at least you'll get action!

:)

Adrienne, yet another excellent point... ;)

personally I wouldn't bother with starting a LDR. Since I travel all the time, basically any relationship is a long distance one for me... So yeah, I'm basically just having fun dating and not worrying about things.

Personally, I can't really imagine a girl blowing me off my feet so much that I could deal with the hassle of the LDR right now. Just not the right time in my life.

Katie said...

And Brian what if you were not traveling all the time but merely in a set location that just happened to involve distance?
